My name is Mr Mike Wang and I am the principal tutor of The Chem Haven.

Since young, I have always been a curious person, creating many headaches for my teachers and parents. As a student, I always remember teachers telling me that what i asked is not in the syllabus and therefore not important.

So as a teacher, I tell myself not to ever brush off my students questions similarly and stifle their sense of curiosity. I always point them in the right direction and encourage them to explore further even if those questions are a bit “off”.

My teaching philosophy is: “What you understand, you don’t have to memorise. “

In our incessant chase of good grades amidst the pressure cooker environment of JC, understanding sometimes just take a backseat. Many teachers just ask students to memorise the required material without much explanation. Much of my learning moments and reflections as a teacher is spent thinking about how to make a concept more easily understandable through analogies and real life examples.

Many of the novel ways of explanation and illustrations were thus developed which resulted in better retention and understanding of concepts. This allowed my students to do well in tackling the harder application questions which are so common in H2 Chem exam papers.
