You are not alone.
In my more than 15 years of teaching, I have already heard these complaints countless times.
While I was still teaching in school, I even remembered seeing a bright overseas MOE scholar from our neighbouring country broke down and cry after a test as she found the paper so difficult。
After leaving MOE in 2011 and going into private tuition, I had to hone my teaching skills and make it effective and engaging as students now have a choice of staying or quitting unlike students in school who have no choice other than their assigned teacher.
Fast forward 14 years later, I believe the key to effective learning is through understanding rather than rote memorisation that is commonly employed in school.
Easier said than done as its so easy to just tell students to memorise some random fact than to crack your brain to figure out how to explain it clearly to students.
“You don’t understand anything until you learn it more than one way.”
— Marvin Minsky
